An Introduction to Animal Angels

Nestled among the rolling fields of North Central Texas is a haven for abused & abandoned dogs.  Animal Angels is as close to heaven as they will ever be, this side of the Rainbow Bridge.  Some of them were lucky enough to be picked up on the side of the road, where they had been abandoned & were wandering aimlessly, bewildered & not understanding why their "Special Person" had left them there alone.  Some were rescued from abusive situations & were lucky enough to get a second chance at a normal life.  Some are injured or handicapped in some way ... Tres was missing a leg and several others have various medical problems.  Many are in their golden years of life .... needing only a secure place to call home, where the love is unconditional & supper is always on time.

Carole Sanders has created just such a place.  With the help of a small but dedicated group of volunteers, Animal Angels is now a safe haven for 200+ dogs.  They come from all walks of life, in all sizes & all colors ... all needing that special care & love that is so generously given here.

We do not "rescue" animals from other shelters.  If they are in another facility, they are already safely out of harm's way & have an opportunity to be adopted.  If indeed they are in a kill shelter & they are eventually euthanized, at least it is by the compassionate hand of someone who has been trained to do it humanely.  We do not as a rule accept owner-release animals.  These animals have YOU to look out for them .. you took responsibility for them when you bought them, adopted them, rescued the stray, or however you came to be their guardian.  They now depend on YOU and it is your duty to fulfill that obligation to them.

With few exceptions, all of our animals have come to us because they had no one else to look after them & no place else to go.  Carole has rescued most of them from the sides of busy highways.  Some have been sent to us by our caring veterinarian after he has performed life-saving procedures .. usually because someone brought it to him after it was hit by a car or mauled by a predator.  A few are here because their lifelong guardian has died or entered an assisted living facility where pets are not allowed & this person has no family to look after their beloved pets.  Our animals are here because they had no one else to keep them from being abused by a sadistic person, starved because they were abandoned when the family moved or could no longer be bothered, maimed by a passing car or ripped to shreds by a coyote pack,  lying in agonizing pain until they die.  They had no one but us, and Animal Angels is here for them.  We are their life-net .. and they are our responsibility.  The Sanctuary is their home .. for life if necessary.

Thru your generous donations or by becoming a Sponsor, you can help guarantee that they will be protected, cared for & loved for the remainder of his/her natural life.

If you would like to experience that wonderful feeling you get when 2 brown eyes look at you with absolute trust & a tail wags slowly, join the Angel Team.  Your donations of time, valuable skills, goods & money are what make Animal Angels a reality.

HISTORY OF ANIMAL ANGELS

Where we came from and where we are going.

In 1993, after years of getting stray dogs, cats, turtles, etc. off the sides of roads from Texas to California and anywhere I happened to be, it became increasingly apparent that I was going to have to become a non-profit if I was to continue to do this work.  I applied for 501 (c) 3 status in December of 1993 and was granted the status in June.

At this time, I should tell you about myself, Carole Sanders, as founder of ANIMAL ANGELS.  I was born in Fort Worth, Texas and have lived in Texas all my life and will most likely die here.  My love for animals began early in life.  My Uncle Lee & Aunt Mae gave me my first dog, a magnificent Dalmatian I named, what else, "Pepper".  This great dog was my constant companion till I was thirteen.  He taught me how to love.

I was a Flight Attendant for American Airlines for 40 years.  I was fortunate enough to be able to retire in November of 2001.  My salary as a Flight Attendant was the main source of funding for ANIMAL ANGELS in the early years.  Now that I've retired, my pension and my SS now make up the difference when donations fall off but we are extremely fortunate to have many generous donors that believe in what we do and continue to support our efforts on behalf of the animals.  I absolutely loved flying and I can't imagine having done anything else.  How many people are fortunate to do something they absolutely love and get paid for it?  I do miss it but now, I've moved into the next phase of my life.   Now I get to spend 24/7/365 with the animals which I also love more than anything in the world.  Guess I'll never really retire and I wouldn't have it any other way.

The last few years has seen us continue to grow and offer help to many animals that otherwise wouldn't be here now.  We've found homes for the lucky ones who were adoptable and been able to better provide for those that are here for the long haul.  Although we don't think there's an animal here that isn't adoptable, the truth is, some would not do well in a family.  There is a place for some of these dogs though.  Recently, we've placed one female Black Lab with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and one male Lab/Mastiff X with a local police department.  We think it's wonderful when an animal that needs to work can make such a noble contribution to the welfare of our country.

There's one thing I do regret.  I have not been able to repay the loan to the wonderful person who is responsible for us being able to buy the property we call home.  This will entail us obtaining a corporate loan and while we enjoy being able to pay the bills and have a wonderful donor base, I'm afraid no bank would consider us a good risk, although there's no question that we could repay any loan.  We will continue to give this wonderful person whatever we can whenever we can.  I just wish we could give it back in one lump sum as I had promised we would.

It looks like we're going to be around for a long time.  Thanks to all of our wonderful friends we will keep on keeping on, making a difference in the lives of the animals and sometimes human lives too.   We welcome your help and invite those that can to come visit.
