On
Friday, May 6, 2005, I had a message from a concerned couple in Arlington.
It seems they had been trying to find someplace to take a sweet six month
old German Shepherd X puppy. Their neighbor, a 20 something young woman
with a six year old little girl, had moved & left this baby tied to a tree
in front of her apartment. They kept looking for her to return to pick up
personal articles inside the apartment, among which was some furniture and
some baby pictures that no mother would leave behind, and this puppy which
she had had since he was only weeks old. The couple finally realized
that she was not returning since the manager said she had been evicted and
had been informed when the locks would be changed. The "objects" she left
behind inside the apartment are just things.
This puppy she tied to a tree
with no food or water, is a living, breathing, heart beating, precious
life. He's capable of feeling pain, fear, hunger and thirst. These
caring people couldn't stand to leave the little guy out there and took
him in. They have an animal of their own but they made a place for Chico
in the kitchen. He was the perfect house guest they said.
Needless
to say, we took this puppy. We call him Jake now and he is just about the
nicest little guy you'll ever want to meet. This sweet couple brought him
to us. Without them, the manager would have called animal control Monday
morning. He would have been taken to the pound and in three days he would
have been killed. Yes, I said killed, not euthanized or put to sleep. Call
it what it is. It's time to stop sugar coating and tell it like it is.
It's not pretty but it's what happens to animals like Jake when people
like this little air head decide she no longer wants to be bothered with
him. If we can find this girl, make no mistake, we will report her to the
authorities and she will be charged with abandonment & cruelty.
Jake was skin and bones when
the couple took him in. He still can stand to put on some weight but he's
looking better. Now instead of being dead in three days, Jake will be
neutered on Monday and get his vaccinations. He will have food, water and
shelter until such time when someone sees him on our Petfinder site or
reads about him and they decide they can't live without him. He's
obviously good with kids since he lived with a six year old for six
months. He's also most likely already housebroken. Jake is waiting.
If you would like to offer
Jake the "furever home" that he deserves, please complete our
Adoption Application to begin the process
of making him a member of your family.
