Meko
|
~ * ~ * ~ UPDATE: Jefferson was adopted to a home with another Husky in April, 2005. The other Husky had been escaping the yard & it was thought that perhaps having Meko, as he was renamed, for company would calm the other dog down. Problem was, instead of her calming down, she taught Meko how to escape the yard & the 2 of them began to romp the neighborhood anytime they were left alone in the yard. Soon the neighbors & the authorities were threatening dire circumstances so Meko was returned to the safety of the Sanctuary. ~ * ~ * ~ Jefferson, as he was called
when we first got him, is a beautiful
Malamute Husky that we rescued from a DFW-area kill shelter just before he
was scheduled to Jefferson is one of the lucky ones. Most animals that come in to the municipal system either as a stray or because their owners just don't want them any more (for more excuses that you can imagine) will never make it out alive. There just are not enough homes for all of these precious animals to be taken in to. Most will be held as long as the shelter can find room for them & then they will be killed to make room for the many more coming in to the system. It is a cruel fact that the once "cute, fluffy puppy" will grow up to be a DOG .. and that only 1 out of every 10 puppies born today will have a home for life with one family or guardian. 2 out of 10 will be lucky enough to get a second chance thru adoption. The rest will end up either being dumped at municipal shelters to be killed by euthanasia or worse yet, they will be abused or abandoned on some lonely country road where all too often they end up either as road kill on the side of the highway or as food for a pack of coyotes or other predators or they simply starve to death because they have no one to care for them. None of these scenarios is something you would want for your best friend but it is a fact that it happens every day in every part of the country. PLEASE ... be a part of the SOLUTION ... SPAY or NEUTER your pets .. and encourage your friends & family to do the same. If we all work together, we CAN someday ensure that every one of these precious animals born will be wanted, cherished & have a good home for life. |
