Meet Beauregard.
Beau is a Basset Hound.  He was found by Jacksboro Police laying on the side of a street Friday night, Nov. 14, 2008, about 9:30.  He was unable to walk or even move.  We speculate he was either hit by a passing care or was thrown from a moving truck.  The officers loaded him into the cruiser and took him to the vet.  He was evaluated, given food, water, a pain shot and made comfortable for the night.  X-rays were taken and it has been determined that his right femoral (hip) joint is completely out of the socket.  He'll have surgery (an FHO) to have the hip joint removed.   Our vet, Dr. Granville Wright at The Animal Hospital on Teasley Lane in Denton will do the surgery.  The cost for only the FHO will be $300.  He also needs all his vaccinations and to be neutered.  Star Kinder, Jacksboro ACO, put Beau's picture in the paper but nobody has come forward to claim this sweet guy so Animal Angels is taking over his care.  After his surgery, he'll be fostered by Homeward Bound Animal Rescue volunteers.  His recovery will be a couple of months and he'll have full use of his right leg.  During the week since his injury happened, there's no doubt Beau has been in a lot of pain but he's never offered any resistance to the people who have been helping him.  If you can spare a few $$$ toward his care or want to give this sweet guy a forever home please complete and submit our online
Adoption Application to begin the process.  Thank You.

UPDATE:  Beau's owner has come forward & signed a release form on him.  He is scheduled for hip surgery Monday (11-24-2008)  Beau will soon be back to his happy self & ready for the wonderful Forever Home that he so much deserves.

An online fundraiser has been started to help with Beau's medical & rehab expenses.  If you would like to help, please click the link below & pledge whatever you can.

This sad looking little fella came to us with a terrible case of mange.  He has open sores & much of his hair has fallen out or been scratched off because of the extreme itching caused by the mange mites.

He is currently under medical treatment & is responding well.  Soon he will be a bouncy, healthy puppy boy, ready for the very special home that he deserves.  He is being called Valiant because of his valiant effort to get well.

It is easy to see that his coat will be a beautiful brindle color when it fully grows back in.  He greatly resembles a Plot Hound but we will know more when he is fully recovered.

If you would like to apply to adopt Valiant, please complete our Adoption Application.

Donations to help with the cost of Valiant's medical treatment may be sent to

Big Nick - A Fight For His Life

This beautiful dog was SHOT & left to die.  The bullet missed his chest by inches, instead shattering his right front leg where it joins his shoulder.  Nick was bleeding profusely when he was found, huddled under a neighbor's carport.  Carole rushed him to our vet's office where he underwent emergency surgery to remove the shattered leg & control the bleeding.   Below are the first pictures taken as the medical staff attempted to save his life.  Click on each one for a larger view.

Nick was found on S. Gibtown Rd. near Perrin, TX.  It is unlikely that he could have traveled very far in the condition he was in so it is presumed that he was shot in that same area.  The person who inflicted this horrible suffering on this beautiful animal is unknown.

Operation Kindness of Carrollton, TX,  is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot him.

Athena's Medical Progress

It was the afternoon of Saturday August 11th.  We had been called to a hamlet in east Texas to rescue a large female Black Lab named Lilly.  She had been abandoned by some irresponsible idiot at a burned out trailer and taken in by a lady who was unable to care for her.  We had loaded Lilly up and were deciding on what route to take back to Jacksboro.  It was already 2230 so we decided to take the "backroads" route instead of going back through Tyler and taking I-20.  All I can say is "it was meant for us to take this route because we had just left Jacksonville, TX, when our headlights caught a dog sitting straight up and dangerously close to the highway.  We immediately whipped around and went back, not believing this dog had not moved.  Sure enough, there she was, sitting stock still and bolt upright.  She looked like a Border Collie X w/ that typical white ring around her neck.  I got out with a leash and a tin of Vienna Sausages, hereafter known as "magic weenies."  As I came near, she began to drag herself to get away.  This is when I realized she had been injured.  I knew she couldn't go far but I feared she would go toward the road.  The "magic weenies" did the trick though.  I was her new best friend and was able to pick her up and put her on the floor in front of me.  She curled up and quickly went to sleep.

A visit to the vet found her to have fractures of both back legs.  She is only about 7 to 8 mo. old but our vet suggested we spay her immediately since, as I suspected, she was pregnant.  She was found to have nine puppies, which she would never have been able to carry to term with her injuries.  We consulted with a orthopedic surgeon that suggested that we let her recover a bit before we tried to do any surgery on her legs.  Athena is enjoying the a/c in our laundry room and sleeping most of the day which is giving her time to heal and surgery may not be necessary but of course, only time will tell.  If at some point surgery is called for, we'll do whatever is needed to give Athena a full, happy life.

~ * ~ * ~  FUNDRAISERS NEEDED  ~ * ~ * ~

Have you ever thought about putting together a neighborhood garage sale or a church/school bake sale or maybe a car wash & donating the proceeds to a charity of your choice?  Many good ideas for fundraisers can be found on the Humane Fundraising Website at  http://humanefundraising.com:80/

Animal Angels would be very appreciative of your fundraising efforts  & the $$ that you are able to contribute toward the care of the animals at the Sanctuary.  In July, 2007, we paid over $7,000 to our vets for emergency medical care alone & there is no end in sight.  Almost daily we are called upon to rescue animals from places where they have been abandoned with no food or water, or from where they have been dumped on the side of the road, often after they have been injured by passing cars & trucks.   We always answer these calls for help to the best of our ability but it is a given that most of these animals will need medical care & often it is emergency, life saving care that they need.  Our vets do give us a small discount on services but the cost is still very high.

We NEED YOUR HELP.  If you are able to hold a fundraiser of any kind for the benefit of the animals that call Animal Angels their home, please contact Carole Sanders at carole@animalangelstexas.org or the phone #s above.  We will assist any way we can with flyers & email promos.  Thank You.

Donate a Bed
We prefer Patented Kuranda Dog Beds because they are durable, chew proof, easy to clean & most of all -- super comfy for our Angels, especially the older ones.  If you would like to spoil us a little, please donate a bed to one of our Senior Angels

Donations
are what make our work possible.

Without your generous help, we would not be able to provide food, shelter & medical care for these wonderful animals.  Many of the animals in our care have or will require surgery, emergency veterinary care, special medications or diets, or some other treatment over & above the normal to save their life and / or to make them healthy & keep them that way.  The wonderful doctors who dedicate so much of their time & services to help us do extend every possible discount but even at a reduced rate, these special services are expensive.   Your donations make it possible for us to provide this extra care.

These wonderful angels have been given a second chance at life because of You, our supporters.  For your convenience, we are now able to accept online donations thru PayPal or you may mail your check to Animal Angels, P.O. Box 336, Jacksboro, TX 76458.
