Spencer

Spencer had been sighted several times running along the side of the highway. He had always managed to elude rescue until one day he just stood, waiting for someone to come along & pick him up. It was like he was too hungry & tired to run any more & he was ready to accept help.

Our best guess is that Spencer is about 4 years old now. His back legs were damaged in an accident sometime before he came to the sanctuary but he can still run with the best of them. He's an active Border Collie & rates a well deserved "10" on anyone's scale except for his hind quarters. That minor defect doesn't bother him, so I don't think it should bother anyone else.  Spencer will be a wonderful companion to these Very Special People who have opened their hearts to him.

UPDATE 6-07-2005:
Carole,

Spencer has found his "spot". He came into the office last night while I was on the computer, and found a little space to crawl into to curl up and feel secure. He is in here right now cutting ZZZZZZs. Tough afternoon at the vet I guess.

So far, so good. Spencer and the girls have gotten along great. Mike left Lucky so that I could take her to the vet this week for more HeartGuard, and except for a small disagreement about who would sleep in "Mom's" bedroom last night, life has been rosy. Actually it wasn't much of a disagreement, just a mad dash to see who could get to the two floor pillows first. Lucky and Tip won, so Spencer acquiesced and went back to his "spot" in the office which is right next to the bedroom.

Tip actually brought him a stuffed animal this morning, dropped it at his feet and then just stared. When he didn't take the hint, she picked up the toy and headed for Lucky so they could play tug-of-war. He is beginning to catch on though. He has been following them around all day.

When we get Spencer healed up and groomed I'll send a picture.

UPDATE 6-08-2005:

Carole--

Spencer has a new wrinkle. He doesn't like Tip's toys, probably because she is always flipping them around in front of him trying to get him to play with her. Anyway, I have caught him several times taking them out in the backyard and nosing them under the fence towards the lake. He is so funny. Then when I go retrieve them he just gives me this look like, why did you go do that? He will get the hint.

He has the same sort of growly greeting in the morning that Lucky has. It's so funny. It's not a real growl, just a half growl, half bark. Both dogs are doing it at the same time, with their back ends all but collapsing with all the wagging.

He gets more and more comfortable every day. Of course yesterday when a friend came over he escaped when I opened the front door. The only reason we were able to catch him is because he was totally preoccupied with the neighbor's trash which was sitting at the curb waiting for pick-up. I really need to work on him coming when called.

We have started working on clicker training with the help of the other two dogs. The first time we used the clicker Spencer high-tailed it outside through the doggie door. However, when he realized there was Bil-Jack associated with the click he quit that immediately.
